Judith Stein Associate

My work in executive coaching, leadership development and organization development was the wonderful culmination of my 35-year administrative career at MIT.  I truly loved this work, feeling that I could finally apply all of my best life and professional skills and expertise in service to my clients and client organizations.  In addition to a deep expertise about academic institutions and culture, I brought a strong bias for action to the work, believing that solutions to most individual and organizational challenges are present, waiting for discovery and development.

I am a very practical person, most interested in helping individuals and groups make positive and lasting change.  My work is guided by three core beliefs:
  • Lasting change comes from total honesty tempered with kindness. Offering anything less than the truth is a grave disservice
  • Respect and value for differences is central.  Our work is much richer if we  each bring our full, best selves to the work
  • The client is the driver for our work together.  My job is to help you accomplish your goals for yourself or for your organization.

Most satisfying work
During my tenure at MIT, I served as an Executive Coach for fellows in MIT’s Leader to Leader (L2L) program (the Institute’s flagship leadership program) and coached the L2L Process Coaches – alumni who coached the current fellows’ project teams.  I am particularly proud of: creating and nurturing MIT’s Employee Resource Groups, from inception to award-winning cultural entities; and designing and delivering four professional development programs for departmental administrative officers, one of MIT’s key administrative roles.  Prior to my retirement from MIT in 2015, I had the honor of being recognized for my work by receiving the MIT Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Award (2014) and an MIT Excellence Award - Advancing Inclusion and Global Perspective (2013).

Frequently used theories and tools
Because my approach is customized to each client’s situation, I draw less on any of the specific tools I might use (MBTI, Emotional Intelligence, Situational Leadership) and more on my deep knowledge of academic institutions and how they work.  I am committed to direct and candid communication and am particularly skilled at helping my clients uncover and make use of their existing knowledge and expertise.  In the course of this developmental process I have a wide array of tools and resources I can share with the client.

Degrees & Certifications:
M.Ed. in Administration, Policy and Planning from Boston University. Certifications in Situational Leadership II® Training for Trainers, Center for Creative Leadership's Benchmarks and 360 Feedback, Center for Creative Leadership’s Coaching Fundamentals, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Emotional Competence Inventory and Organizational Development from NTL Institute.
